What Does it REALLY Mean to Be Empowered?

What does it mean to be empowered? By the very definition, ’empowerment’ means: The process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights.

Do you feel empowered? What would you or your life look like if you felt or were ’empowered’?

Maybe you would have a savings account with enough money to go where you want, or do what you need to do – when you need to do it. Perhaps your life would be you living out your dream job or career, unattached to a desk or anything (or anyone) that holds you back.

Whatever your vision of an empowered life, it can be yours. What is holding you back? Is it the past? Fear?

Every Woman Should Have…

In Pamela Redmond Satran’s poem (often attributed with Maya Angelou, though it is not her work), she writes:

  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….Enough money within her control to move out…And rent a place of her own even if she never wants to or needs to…
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….Something perfect to wear if the employer or date of her dreams wants to See Her in an hour…
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE …A youth she’s content to leave behind….
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….A past juicy enough that she’s looking forward to retelling it in her Old Age….
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE… A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra…
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….One friend who always makes her laugh…And one Who lets her cry…
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….A good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her Family…
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….Eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, And a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel Honored…
  • A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….A feeling of control over her destiny…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…How to fall in love without losing herself.
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…HOW TO QUIT A JOB, BREAK UP WITH A LOVER, AND CONFRONT A FRIEND WITHOUT RUINING THE FRIENDSHIP…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…When to try harder…And WHEN TO WALK AWAY…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW… That she can’t change the length of her calves, The width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…That her childhood may not have been perfect…But it’s over…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…What she would and wouldn’t do for love or more…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…How to live alone…Even if she doesn’t like it…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…Whom she can trust, Whom she can’t, And why she shouldn’t take it personally…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…Where to go…Be it to her best friend’s kitchen table…Or a charming inn in the woods…When her soul needs soothing…
  • EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…What she can and can’t accomplish in a day…A month…And a year…

How many of these can you check off your list?

You don’t have to hold yourself hostage to who you used to be, or anything you ever used to do. Because who has lived, and hasn’t made mistakes? When I think about my 20s and what a foolish girl I was and how I would give over my power to men who really didn’t mean me well. But now I hold no grudges against them either because I realize I’m the one who gave over the power -because I didn’t know any better. And now that I know better, I know that I don’t have to do that again. It’s one of the most powerful lessons any one of us can know.

I say to my girls all the time that your real work is to figure out where your power base is, and to work on the alignment of your personality, your gifts that you have to give, with the real reason why you’re here. That’s the number one thing you have to do, is to work on yourself -and to fill yourself up and keep your cup full.

Be overjoyed with “being full of yourself”.  It isn’t until we are full that we are able to offer and give of ourselves. – Oprah

The questions to really meditate on today are: Have I figured out the real reason I am here? And, if I’m not sure, how do I get clear with this? As women on a journey of self-empowerment are we doing everything we can to seek what makes us happy and fulfilled? Are we in control of our finances? Are we filling our cups full of ourselves to bring joy to others?
